Root Canal Treatment Gainesville, VA

Root canal treatment is designed to eliminate bacteria from the infected root canal, prevent reinfection of the tooth and save the natural tooth. When one undergoes a root canal, the inflamed or infected pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected, then filled and sealed.

A root canal is usually needed when the tissue within the tooth, known as the pulp, is infected or injured. This may occur via a deep cavity, traumatic injury, cracked teeth, chipped teeth, or dental procedures near the pulp where a new filling or crown has been placed. Patient’s symptoms may include one or more of the following:

  • Momentary sensitivity to hot or cold food
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold foods after dental treatment
  • Sharp pain when biting down the food
  • Lingering pain after eating hot or cold foods
  • Constant and severe pain and pressure, swelling of gum and sensitivity to touch
  • Dull ache and pressure in upper teeth and jaw

What Is Involved In Root Canal Treatment?

The Endodontist removes the inflamed or infected pulp, carefully cleans and shapes the inside of the root canal, then fills and seals the space. Afterwards, you will return to your dentist, who will place a crown or other restoration on the tooth to protect and restore it to full function. After the restoration, the tooth continues to function like any other tooth.
